Speaker Muffled After Water

If your speaker started sounding muffled right after your phone got wet, water is almost certainly trapped in the speaker grille. This is the most common speaker problem and also the most fixable. The tool above plays a 165 Hz tone designed to push that water out.
Quick diagnosis
Answer these three questions:
- Did the muffling start after water exposure? Rain, a drop, a splash, sweat, or steam all count. If yes, continue here.
- Is it the main speaker or the earpiece? Play music. If music is muffled, it is the main speaker and the tool above is correct. If only calls are quiet, switch to the earpiece cleaner.
- Was it salt water or pool water? If yes, rinse the phone gently with clean fresh water first. Salt needs a rinse before anything else, because corrosion starts fast.
The fix
Press play on the tool above. Set volume to maximum, hold the speaker facing down, and let the full 3 minute cycle run. Wipe away droplets with a soft cloth, then run a second cycle. Most splashes clear in one or two cycles.
Then play a song you know well. Compare it to how you remember it sounding. If it is clear, you are done.
If it is still muffled
- Wait and retry. Water hides in the mesh. Give the phone an hour in a ventilated spot, then run the tone again.
- Check for dust too. If the phone is older, water may have glued existing lint into a paste. Run the dust cleaner after the water eject.
- Run the speaker test. The speaker test tells you whether the remaining problem is a blockage or actual damage.
- Consider the timeline. If the phone was submerged for a long time, water may have reached past the grille. Sound cannot reach it there, and a repair shop should inspect the phone.
What not to do
Do not use a hair dryer on high heat, do not shake the phone violently, and do not poke the grille with anything sharp. Heat can damage the battery and the screen adhesive, shaking can spread water deeper inside, and sharp objects puncture the speaker membrane.
